Lipkin-Moore made a lasting impression
I sit here at work and often think about people I've come in contact with and events I've covered, hoping I have somehow made a difference in my own small way, in the grand scheme of life's things.
And once in a while I think of a young woman that worked here while attending high school and was someone that, I"m sure, had so many of her own hopes and dreams in her life cut so very short.
I often remember Jayme Lipkin-Moore, a bright, intelligent, and driven 17-year-old woman who worked here at the Derry News as an intern for several months. When Jayme died in a tragic accident in 2002, all of us here at the office who had come to know and appreciate this young woman's hard work and perseverance were shocked and saddened.
Jayme was a fighter, an activist for the things she believed in and had way too many years ahead of her to have it end like this.
But from the sadness and tragedy of that time in 2002, an organization rose up in Jayme's name, to continue her dreams, her passions for life and her hopes of helping those around the world needing it most.
Jayme's Fund for Social Justice was created to remember the Derry teen's hope for world change, and to extend that hope and help to organizations working to make positive differences in the lives of others. Jayme's Fund promotes tolerance and diversity, and also helps encourage young people to be involved in social concerns.
As part of Jayme's Fund's work to bring that awareness of tolerance and social change, a special event is planned next month to continue what Jayme started in her short life.
"Speak Truth to Power: Voices From Beyond the Dark" is a stage reading set for Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. at Pinkerton Academy's Stockbridge Theatre. This is the New Hampshire premier of this special event.
"Speak Truth to Power" celebrates human rights defenders from around the world and includes a stellar line up of guest participants.
Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Ariel Dorfman wrote the stage adaptation from the book by Kerry Kennedy, a daughter of Sen. Robert F. Kennedy. Portraits by award winning photographer Eddie Adams will be displayed in the Stockbridge gallery as part of the event from Oct. 9 through Nov. 2
Cast members include former U.S. Poet Laureate Maxine Kumin, humorist Rebecca Rule, novelist Andre Dubus III, NHPR "Word of Mouth" host Virginia Prescott, actor Richard Backus, actress and singer Gloria Reuben, globally-recognized activist and Derry student Dylan Mahalingam, musician Albie Monterrosa, political activist Katrina Swett, and minister and radio host Woody Woodland.
All of us here in Derry can be extremely proud of young Dylan, a young Derry middle-schooler that has taken on the world in a big way with his concerns, his hard work, and his global efforts to help children in need around the world. He has been honored on a global level for his organization, Lil' MDGs, working to bring awareness and help to so many in far-off lands.
The night is hosted by WZID morning show host MIke Morin with special appearances by musical group deSol and singer/songwriter Lisa Jane Lipkin, Jayme Lipkin-Moore's aunt.
Tickets for "Speak Truth to Power: Voices From Beyond the Dark" are priced from $10 to $25 and are available through the Stockbridge Theatre box office, by calling 437-5210 or visit online at www.stockbridgetheatre.com. Ticket discounts are available for seniors and students.
So we remember Jayme Lipkin-Moore as the years pass and hope and pray her caring nature and her global concerns for others pay off in the things we do and the actions we take. In the meantime, we can gather to enjoy this program, hear the stories of help and hope in the world, and see the images of so many around the world who matter and are reaping the rewards from people like Jayme.
