Derry News Santa Fund in full holiday swing

Local schoolchildren collect pennies from chores they do around the house, keeping them in a closely guarded jar.

The collection of jingling change will go a long way to help someone this holiday season.

Every year, local students work hard to make a different to help those in need. Simple tasks like collecting loose change, or bringing in donations of food, clothing, hats and mittens can mean the world of difference to someone struggling.

Staff members at Pinkerton Academy joined together to raise more than $1,200 for the Santa Fund in memory of two beloved faculty members who died this year, Ralph Van Nostrand and Bill Cofrin.

The Derry News Santa Fund hopes people will find it in their hearts to offer help to those who are unemployed, housebound, hungry or worried about how to keep their homes warm.

Every year, the list is long of those who need a helping hand, not only at the holidays, but all year long.

Money raised through the Santa Fund will go to support the Derry Community Fund, working in the Greater Derry area for more than 40 years to bring hope and help to families and individuals.

Local organizations, churches, and schools are adopting families, collecting toys, food and clothing to help make a difference.

The Greater Derry Londonderry Chamber of Commerce has a wide variety of handmade wreaths now on display at the Chamber office at the Adams Memorial Building, 29 West Broadway.

The wreaths will be auctioned off as part of the Chamber’s first Wreath Stroll and holiday open house event to support the Santa Fund.

Wreaths were donated by area businesses and organizations. The auction is set for Dec. 12 from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Chamber office.

Tax-deductible donations for the Santa Fund can be dropped off at the Derry News office at 46 West Broadway, or mailed to: Derry News Santa Fund, P.O. Box 207, Derry, 03038.

Donations can also be made online at Contributors will be listed in future editions of the paper.

Contributions to date total $4,664.
