Town of Derry offers Giving Tree to help others

---- — DERRY — The town is hoping to make a difference in the lives of those in need this holiday season.

A Giving Tree is once again located in the lobby of the municipal center at 14 Manning St.

The Derry Community Fund and Sonshine Soup Kitchen will benefit from items collected. They willl distribute collected items to help residents in town.

There will be designated donation boxes to supplement the work of the Community Fund and Sonshine Soup Kitchen this year.

Along with town employees, the public in invited to stop by and select a card off the tree, purchase the items and then return them to the municipal center.

People can donate items like winter outerwear for all ages, undergarments for men and women, personal care items and teen gifts.

The Community Fund is still accepting holiday applications for those needing help. Applications are available at the Human Services office at the municipal center Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Human Services also offers emergency services to Derry residents lacking adequate financial resources to meet their needs. Assistance can include rent, shelter, electric, oil, emergency medication, transportation and food.

The Sonshine Soup Kitchen offers a free, hot meal to anyone, Monday through Friday, at 4:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church parish hall, 4 Crystal Ave.

Monetary donations are also welcome and can be mailed to: 4 Crystal Ave., #4, Derry, 03038 or delivered to the soup kitchen in person between 1 and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The municipal lobby is open Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Wednesday until 7 p.m. for anyone wanting to support the Giving Tree or make donations.

The last drop-off day is Dec. 12 for the Derry Community Fund and Dec. 18 for the Sonshine Soup Kitchen.
