'Crazy For You' opens March 25 at Stockbridge Theatre

DERRY — Pinkerton Academy's Pinkerton Players will stage the Tony Award-winning musical "Crazy For You" at the Stockbridge Theatre March 25-27 at 7 p.m. and again on March 28 at 2 p.m.

The show features some of musical theater's best known songs, including "Embraceable You," "I Got Rhythm" and "Someone to Watch Over Me." It's based on the George and Ira Gershwin classic 1930 show, "Girl Crazy."

The show involves mistaken identities in the Nevada mining town of Deadrock, a stage-struck New York City rich boy, and plenty of romance and fun dance numbers.

Taking the lead roles in the musical are seniors Lauren DeCloux of Chester and Tyler Christie of Hampstead, playing Polly and Bobby, respectively.

DeCloux, who hopes to major in musical theater following graduation this year, said the show has been a challenge, but a lot of fun.

Christie said he had never taken tap dancing before and it is sometimes hard to keep his feet going along with the singing and dialogue. But, he added, he is having a lot of fun. He hopes to study directing after high school.

Pinkerton fine arts director Thomas Quigley said "Crazy For You" is big on dancing. Before the play auditions were held, about 50 students came out for a preliminary tap dance lesson, offered by choreographer Bethany Cassidy.

He said this was the year for an uplifting show.

Quigley added students needed to learn to dance to be part of the "Crazy For You" cast since so many of his students hope to have a future in musical theater.

He said students have been working hard to prepare for opening night, from planning rehearsals on their own during off days, to using days off from school to get together to practice.

"They want to be so good," Quigley said.

Tickets are on sale through the Stockbridge Theatre box office, or by calling 437-5210. Tickets are $10 for reserved seating.
