Red Star Twirlers win big in national competition

Red Stars make impressive showing in national contest

---- — DERRY — The Red Star Twirlers made a top showing at the National Baton Twirling Association’s National/World Twirling Championship event last month at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana.

The twirlers, representing many towns in the area, earned top awards in group and solo numbers, returning to town with medals and trophies in almost all of the events entered.

Some twirlers were entered in multiple competitions. The local team was one of the smallest to compete at nationals, but was successful in team and individual events.

Taking the 2013 Intermediate Juvenile Miss Majorette of America Award was 10-year-old Emily Cowette of Londonderry.

She is the first Red Star to win that honor since 1991, when one of her instructors, KeriAnn Lynch, took the award at the age of 9.

Other Red Stars made a top showing at the competition, too.

Derry’s Isabella Bolduc, 15, brought home another national title in Show Twirl. She twirled a performance using up to three batons to the song “Don’t Rain on My Parade.” She was also part of all 13 Red Star teams competing at nationals this year.

Jessica Avelar of Nashua took a national honor in flag baton twirling and also in the older division of Show Twirl.

In the collegiate divisions, Alyssa McLaughlin earned final status in four events.

The Red Star team also performed a seven-minute routine to music from the Broadway show “Sister Act,” complete with unique red-sequined habits designed by Cindy Baronne of Alfredo Designs in Chester.

The twirlers won the World/National Corps With Props category. Red Star Twirlers also made the top nine in all 13 routines entered and placed sixth in five of the categories.

All Red Stars returned home with Top 10 medals or trophies, Some twirlers entered up to 10 events, the most allowed, and placed in all of them.

Other awards included: advanced members with three or more top three placements, Jessica Avelar, Isabella Bulduc, Katie Carlson, Emma Convey, Kaleigh McIver, Alyssa McLaughlin and Allie Nault.

Intermediate members with three or more Top 10 awards included Olivia Bollhorst, Danielle Cherry, Emily Cowette, Jaycee Greenberg and Elizabeth Tuller.

Other team members also earning medals were Mikhala Bornstein, Morgan Toree, Patricia Calder, Haily Leipold, Emily Peaslee, Jacki Peaslee and Alanna Grondine.

The Red Stars will be performing in the upcoming Londonderry Old Home Day parade on Aug. 17. The group practices regularly at Veterans Hall in Derry. For information, visit the Red Stars at theredstartwirlers.com.
