Derry gets ready for annual surplus auction

DERRY — There's definitely something for everyone at this auction.

From a pair of gloves to a leather wallet, from an unclaimed bicycle to tools and a snowplow, this sale has it all.

On Sept. 18, a long list of items — collected or left over from town departments or found through the Derry Police Department — will go on the auction block at police headquarters on Folsom Road beginning at 9 a.m.

The annual event makes all of the town's surplus items available to the public, with proceeds going to the town, according to Derry police Capt. George Feole. He said the list of items is long every year and includes anything from outdated electronics and unused office lockers to Public Works vehicles and equipment.

Police Lt. Jon Twiss said some of the auction items are things no one ever claims.

"Usually some items are from evidence and (we could) never determine the owner," he said.

Other items, like recovered GPS systems or radar detectors are often too difficult to return to owners when serial numbers are unknown.

Several vehicles that will be sold are parked outside the station, including two utility trucks with snowplows and two Ford Explorers.

This year's surplus auction also features more than 30 bicycles Derry police collected or found in the past year that remain unclaimed.

"We get tons of bikes," Twiss said.

Bikes not sold may be donated to charity, he said.

Feole said town departments offer surplus items for the auction each year, and event attendance is always good. Alan Cote, superintendent of operations for the highway department, will serve as auctioneer.

"We get a fair amount of interest from the public," Feole said.

He said the auction could net several thousand dollars for the town.

The entire property list will be available on the town website, derry.nh.us, by Sept. 15.
