DERRY BRIEFS

Library hosts herb program July 10

Derry Public Library hosts a program, “Herbs to Grow and Use” on July 10 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Participants will learn about the medicinal benefits of some common and uncommon herbs to include in their gardens this year.

The program coincides with the library’s summer adult reading program theme, “Digging into Derry.”

Adult Services Librarian Sherry Bailey said this program was perfect.

“I decided a gardening program like this would bring in the literal interpretation of ‘digging’ to offset the more metaphorical research-oriented programs coming up,” she said.

The program is led by clinical herbalist Maria Noel. Call the library for information at 432-6140.

Rain puts damper on dam work

Town officials said the rain over the past few weeks have slowed progress on the Beaver Meadow Dam in East Derry. Structural damage was discovered back in May; town crews and construction workers have been working hard to complete the repairs.

Public Works Director Mike Fowler told town councilors the weather hasn’t been helpful.

“We need a long stretch of dry weather, a week to 10 days of sustainable dry weather,” he said.

He said there is no use spending town resources to complete work that might be comprised by wet weather later on.

“The dam is stable, but we can’t keep up with the water,” he said.

The dam dates back to 1929. It is accessed off East Derry Road from Sabra Circle and Martha Drive at the southern end of Beaver Lake.

Council remembers longtime officials

Two longtime Derry officials were honored at a recent Town Council meeting.

Roland Routhier died June 17 and served as Supervisor of the Checklist for many years. Florence “Flo” Ouellette died May 31 and also served Derry well, working as the town’s animal control officer for 26 years.

Officials paid respects to both veteran town officials. Routhier received a Town Council certificate of appreciation prior to his death.
