Got talent? Try out

Anyone with a talent for singing, dancing, playing an instrument, or even juggling is invited to sign up for this year’s Greater Derry’s Got Talent show. The annual talent event will be held in September with preliminary auditions taking place Aug. 27 and 28 at Dance Progressions, 109 Hillside Avenue, Derry.

The show is hosted by the Greater Derry Arts Council. Applications are now being accepted for those who wish to try out. The cost to enter is $15. Deadline to enter is Aug. 20. Visit derryarts.org or call 432-2129.

Seniors invited to picnic

Senior citizens are invited to a summer picnic on Aug. 28 at noon at Gallien’s Town Beach.

Derry adults 50 and older can attend the picnic. Barbecue basics will be provided by all visitors are asked to bring a dish to share. After lunch, there will be music and dancing. Call for information and to register at 432-6136. A ticket is required for the free event.

Cable volunteers to be honored

Derry’s community television honors its volunteers during the second annual Volunteer Appreciation Day on Aug. 30 from 4 to 6 p.m. The event is held at Alexander-Carr Park off Pierce Ave.

All volunteers, producers and directors of local programming will be recognized with awards, prizes. Community television officials will provide hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks. Feel free to bring a dish to share. RSVP to 845-5515.

Beach to close for season

Gallien’s Town Beach at Beaver Lake is open for its final day of the season on Sept. 2.

After that, the waterfront area will be closed. The park is open the last day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting.

Garden club hosts flower show

The Derry Garden Club hosts its Standard Flower Show on Sept. 7 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Derry, 40 Hampstead Road.
