DERRY — The Greater Derry/Londonderry Chamber of Commerce has named Janet Conroy its Citizen of the Year for 2012.
Londonderry’s Mr. Steer took the Chamber’s top honor as Business of the Year.
The annual awards were announced recently by new Chamber executive director Stacey Bruzzese and the Board of Directors.
Conroy, of Derry, has a long list of community service and other accomplishments to her credit.
She was the first female elected to Derry’s then Board of Selectmen, in 1976, and also became the first woman board chairman.
Conroy also became the first female to join the Derry Village Rotary Club, spent 12 years as a state representative and served as a library trustee.
She is a lifelong member of the Marion Gerrish Community Center, recently celebrating its 40th anniversary in town.
Conroy is still very active at the center.
Mr. Steer and owner Chris George have been Londonderry community staples since the store opened on Route 102 in 1975.
Mr. Steer is now located off Buttrick Road.
George is know for his many contributions to the town and to programs that include local food pantries and Londonderry’s ALERT program.
Both Conroy and George will be honored at the Chamber’s annual awards dinner event later this month.
