DERRY — A bridge on West Broadway will memorialize a fallen Marine from Derry.
The New Hampshire Senate last week passed House Bill 1389 naming the bridge on state Route 102 in Derry for Lance Cpl. Michael Geary, who died in combat Dec. 8, 2010, while trying to take a Taliban stronghold in Afghanistan.
Geary was a Pinkerton Academy graduate.
The Senate unanimously approved the bill, which the House previously passed on a voice vote.
It would become law this June with the governor’s signature.
Rep. Al Baldasaro, R-Londonderry, was the prime sponsor of the bill; co-sponsors included 10 other lawmakers from Derry and Londonderry.
About 3,000 Pinkerton students and faculty, with flags in hands and hands over hearts, saluted Geary as a memorial procession passed through campus in December 2010.
Students gathered in the cold described Geary as heroic and brave.
“He died for all of us,” said family friend Tim Shannon, then a Pinkerton student. “I think he would be proud of us doing this for him.”
