Derry gardeners honor club member's memory

Club remembers with book donations

Derry News

---- — DERRY — Local gardeners are remembering one of their own.

The Derry Garden Club traditionally donates a book to a local library in memory of a club member. Gardeners most recently donated books in memory of longtime member Carl Daily.

The books, “The Illustrated Encycolopedia of Trees,” “Beginners Guide to Growing Heirloom Vegetables” and “Edible Landscape” were donated to Taylor and Derry Public Libraries.

Daily became active with the local garden club when his wife Mary Lea joined in 1969. He officially became a member in 2000.

He helped the club with landscaping projects and construction work, sharing his knowledge of woodworking, plants, composting and much more.

Club members said Daily could also be counted on to be a useful part of the club. He often built platforms and tables for club flower shows.

Daily and his son Rodney were also involved in the life of an aging sugar maple tree at the Robert Frost Farm in Derry.

The tree was eventually taken down several years ago and the Daily family used the wood to create many handcrafted bowls and other wooden items to share with local artisans.
