---- — DERRY — The town has a newly approved contract between its ambulance service and Auburn and Chester.
Town councilors approved a new contract between Derry's emergency responders and those two communities at a meeting July 9.
The contracts for both Auburn and Chester have five-year terms and an annual 9 percent increase in fees.
In addition to the contract fees, Derry also receives revenues from those towns for EMS services from patients transported by the fire department.
Derry's relationship with Chester dates back to the 1970s. Auburn has used Derry ambulances since 1990.
There is no additional staffing for assisting these two towns and it's a win/win for Derry's revenue stream, fire Chief George Klauber said.
"We have tried to find revenue sources that would not impact the taxpayers," he said. "And this does not negatively impact service to the town of Derry."
Town Councilor Neil Wetherbee said the fire department has done a great job finding those much-needed extra revenue sources for the town.
"You've done a phenomenal job," Wetherbee told Klauber.
In fiscal year 2012, the town received $225,708 in ambulance revenue from Auburn and Chester, which came from 151 and 116 patient transports, respectively.
Another 82 calls came in where no patient needed transport.
If all four of Derry's ambulances are committed to calls or otherwise unable to respond to those towns, Klauber said, a mutual aid ambulance contract would send a vehicle from a neighboring community to help.
