Towns plan Veterans Day observances

Area veterans will be honored in Derry and Londonderry with special events, including breakfasts, parades, traditional services and remembrances.

In Londonderry, veterans will be treated to a free breakfast on Nov. 9 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Londonderry High School cafeteria.

The high school’s Pay It Forward Club hosts the breakfast and will honor the veterans with special activities and gifts.

Following the breakfast, American Legion Post 27 hosts the annual Veterans Day parade, stepping off from the high school at 10 a.m.

The parade marches down Mammoth Road to the Town Common for traditional services. Refreshments follow at the Post home on Sargent Road.

In Derry, Veterans Day begins with Pinkerton Academy’s Class of 2017 hosting its annual free veterans breakfast from 7 to 9:30 a.m. at the school’s Academy Building cafe.

At 10 a.m., there will be a blessing of veterans service at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 63 East Broadway. Traditional services then follow at 10:30 a.m. in MacGregor Park. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1617 and American Legion members will host the event, featuring guest speakers, patriotic music and proclamations.

Following the park service, the VFW hosts an open house at its post on Railroad Avenue from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Veteran visits to local nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and retirement communities will follow.
