---- — Book sale planned Nov. 9

A book sale will be held Nov. 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Derry Public Library.

Book sales are held on the second Saturday of every month through June. Proceeds support programs at both Derry Public and Taylor libraries and also help purchase museum passes for patrons.

Birch Heights honors vets

Birch Heights retirement facility, 7 Kendall Road, honors veterans with a special breakfast on Nov. 9 from 8 to 9 a.m. The free breakfast includes eggs, bacon, homemade muffins, juice and coffee.

Seating is limited; call to reserve a spot at 425-7755.

Help clean up the rail trail

A volunteer group will do Derry Rail Trail cleanup Saturday, Nov. 9, and welcome help. Meet at the Bowers Road Crossing at 9 a.m.

The town is providing bags and pickup once the bags are filled.

Volunteers should bring gloves.

Sign up for AARP driving

Nutfield Medical Building 44 hosts AARP safe driving classes on Nov. 11 and 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day.

The classes including age-related information on defensive driving techniques, reaction time, changes in vision and hearing, safety belts and much more. There are no tests and some insurance companies may offer discounts for completing the course.

The fee is $14, $12 for AARP members. The classes are open to all ages, but geared to those over the age of 50. Call 1-877-642-2362 to register.

GOP Committee to meet

The Derry Republican Committee meets on Nov. 13 at the Halligan Tavern, 32 West Broadway, at 7 p.m. The guest speaker for the night is Dan Innis, former dean of the Whittemore School of Business and a congressional candidate.

A short business meeting will follow and light refreshments will be served. Call for information at 425-7598.

Pinkerton Players take the stage

Pinkerton Players present a stage version of the holiday classic "It's A Wonderful Life" Nov. 14-16 at p.m. and again Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. at the Stockbridge Theatre at Pinkerton Academy. Call the theater box office for tickets at 437-5210.

Get help with Affordable Care

Derry Public Library hosts the next in a series of programs on the Affordable Care Act on Nov. 19 at 6:30 p.m. Karen Kelly, community organizer for the N.H. Citizens Alliance will discuss the healthcare issue and what it means and who is eligible. All are welcome to attend. Call 432-6140 for information. Registration is suggested but not required.

Calling all teen contestants

The 10th annual Miss New Hampshire Outstanding Teen competition is set for February 2014 and the deadline to enter is fast approaching.

Contest hopefuls must apply by the Nov. 29 deadline by visiting missnh.org/outstanding-teen. The program is for girls ages 13 to 17 and is the little sister program of the Miss America organization. The competition is intended to encourage and reward talent, communication skills, community service and academic achievement.

Bring on the holidays

Derry welcomes the holiday season with the annual parade hosted by the Greater Derry Londonderry Chamber of Commerce. The parade is set for Nov. 30 at 1 p.m. and steps off from West Broadway, heading down to Crystal Avenue and ending at Hood Commons.

This year's theme is "Light Up the Holidays" with many marching units, bands, school and business floats and much more. Derry Village Rotary Club members will be walking the parade route to collect canned food to donate to local food pantries. Following the parade, the annual "Very Derry Holiday" schedule of events takes place, hosted by Derry Parks and Recreation.

Annual Reindeer Romp set

West Running Brook Middle School hosts its annual "Reindeer Romp" on Dec. 6 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. There will be holiday music, raffles, food, and other activities. Students and parents can shop for gifts at the event. Call for information at 432-1250.
