DERRY — The Rhythm of New Hampshire Show Chorus, a charter member of Sweet Adelines International, a barbershop harmony organization for women, is seeking women of all ages who enjoy singing.
Join chorus members at a weekly rehearsal every Thursday at the Marion Gerrish Community Center, 39 West Broadway, beginning at 6:45 p.m. All voice parts are welcome, but low voices are especially needed as the group prepares for its regional competition on April 16 in Springfield, Mass.
"Musical background isn't necessary to sing with our chorus," chorus director Jessie Oslan said. "Any woman of average singing ability, with or without vocal training, can find a part that fits her voice range. The real benefit to belonging to a Sweet Adelines chapter is the tremendous amount of educational opportunities afforded to our members. Whether at our weekly rehearsals, regional weekends or through personal vocal instruction, each member can grow and gain a greater appreciation for singing the barbershop musical style."
The group has numerous public performances scheduled throughout the winter and early spring in preparation for competition.
"We encourage anyone thinking about giving our chorus a try to come to a Thursday rehearsal and sing a few tunes with us," chorus team leader Janine Hoidahl said. "Learning barbershop generates endorphins, a beneficial hormone in the body that can aid in lifting mood, improving heart rate and other positive physical benefits. Singing is a great way to spend the cold winter months and start a new hobby that can last a lifetime."
The chorus celebrates and encourages diversity and anticipates a wide range of vocal selections from blues to jazz, and Broadway show tunes and contemporary favorites. The RNH Show Chorus also provides numerous community service performances and educational opportunities on the barbershop style, its history and importance to contemporary music. In addition, the group promotes harmony and friendship among women.
"We work hard and have a great time together while we bring out our 'inner divas' for performance," Oslan said.
