Student productions are coming to a theater near you
As winter continues and cold weather surrounds us, nothing warms the heart more than a local performance by some of the area's most talented young actors.
In the weeks ahead, several productions featuring youth from Derry and surrounding towns will bring their talents to local stages.
West Running Brook Middle School students are hard at work this week, polishing up their lines and musical numbers for this weekend's performances of the musical "Thoroughly Modern Millie" set to be staged on Friday at 7 p.m. and again on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Pinkerton Academy's Stockbridge Theatre.
Directed by West Running Brook staffers Jennifer Ciarla and Blake Leister, the show features a cast and crew of middle-schoolers working in front of the stage curtain and behind the scenes.
Longtime parent volunteers, the Stage Bears, work side by side with the young thespians, helping with publicity, stage work, costuming and ticket sales.
Tickets for the West Running Brook production of "Thoroughly Modern Millie" are set at $5 for students and senior citizens, $7 for adults. They are available at the box office at the Stockbridge Theatre one hour prior to show time. Advance ticket sales can be made by calling 437-2255. Call West Running Brook for more information at 321-1250.
Other young entertainers are working hard at their craft, too. Kids Coop Theatre members are rehearsing for the upcoming production of the show "Once Upon A Mattress," set to be performed on March 12 at 7 p.m. and March 13 at 1 and 7 p.m.
The show will be staged at the Adams Memorial Opera House in downtown Derry. Kids Coop has found a home at the Opera House for many years, using the classic gem of a building as its home base for a full season of shows.
Following "Once Upon A Mattress," the Coop kids plan a spring performance schedule of one of my absolute favorites from the musical theater world, Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella" set for performances in May.
Tickets for Kids Coop Theatre's performances are $10 and are available through the group's Web site at www.kids-coop-theatre.org.
Anyone looking for some top-notch entertainment should consider beating the winter doldrums and getting out for a night of musical theater. And supporting the arts and the talented students on stage makes for a great night of affordable family fun.
The play's the thing in Derry this winter!
