Rotary hosts Frost kick-off for seniors
The Derry Village Rotary will hold its own kickoff to the Frost Festival, set for Feb. 13 and 14. The Rotary hosts a free spaghetti supper for senior citizens on Feb. 12 at Gilbert H. Hood Middle School at 5 p.m. Seniors wishing to attend the free dinner can register with the Derry Recreation office by calling 432-6136. February vacation trip
Join the Derry Parks and Recreation Department for a trip to Charmingfare Farm during February vacation week. On Feb. 24, take a for sleigh ride through the farm, roast marshmallows over a bonfire, sip hot cocoa, and visit the animals in the petting zoo.
The bus will leave from Hood Commons at 12:15 p.m. and return to Derry about 4 p.m.
Register with the Recreation Office by Feb. 17. Derry resident registration fee is $13 and includes all activities listed. Non-resident registration fee is $23. Miss NH sets sights on Miss America crown
Lindsey Graham, Miss New Hampshire 2009, is in Las Vegas to participate in the 2010 Miss America Pageant that will be aired live on TLC on Jan. 30 from 8 to 10 p.m. Graham will perform her own arrangement of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and play the piano for the talent portion of competition.
Graham is a 2008 summa cum laude graduate of Fordham University, graduating in just three years. She has won nearly $50,000 in scholarships from her competitions with the Miss New Hampshire Scholarship Program.
New Outstanding Teen named
An Auburn teen took top honors in the recent Miss Outstanding Teen competition, held on Jan. 17 at Pinkerton Academy. Lauren April of Auburn won the top honors at the sixth annual event. The Mount Zion Christian School's junior also won the Academic Merit Award and the overall interview award.
Twenty-six contestants competed for more than $3,000 in scholarships and the right to compete at the sixth annual Miss America's Outstanding Teen in August in Orlando, Fla. Miss New Hampshire's Outstanding Teen Competition is a program for girls 13 to 17 years of age. It is the little sister program to the Miss America Organization.
Top finalists included: Lauren Percy, first runner-up; Angela Berube, second runner-up; Kaitlyn Little, third runner-up; and Melanie Konstant, fourth runner-up.
