Derry students head to the polls
DERRY — It's not just adults heading to the polls March 9 to cast ballots for what they want.
Students in Derry's elementary and middle schools will cast their own votes for things they would like to see happen in their classrooms.
At East Derry Memorial Elementary School, students will choose what type of reward activity they would like as part of the school's PBIS respect program.
Ernest P. Barka Elementary School students will choose a cookout, a time capsule or a scavenger hunt as part of their voting choices. Other schools will vote on their own choices for fun things to do.
"It is a great introduction to a civic duty and right that we all have," Barka second-grade teacher Mary Ellen Stella said. "The students learn at an early age that their voice can be heard and that their vote does count."
Voting takes place at either Gilbert H. Hood Middle School for Districts 1 and 4, and at West Running Brook Middle School for Districts 2 and 3 voters. Polls open at 7 a.m.
