DERRY BRIEFS

Learn all about trains on Thursday

A model railroading event is held on Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. at the Marion Gerrish Community Center, 39 West Broadway.

Stan Ames will give a presentation on running real steam locomotives in Poland. His overseas experiences give a tremendous amount of insight into the operation of steam. Also, Stan and Debbie Ames have an operating outdoor garden layout. The train events continue in March. All are welcome to attend.

Free AARP tax help is available

The Nutfield Chapter AARP of Greater Derry once again offers free tax assistance with federal and state income taxes.

Volunteers are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Marion Gerrish Community Center, 39 West Broadway.

You don't have to be an AARP member to receive help. Bring last year's tax return, if available, and any W2s, 1099s, income documents or expense reports.

Tax help runs weekly through April 12.

Televised candidate forum set Feb. 19

Derry Community Television will air "Political Connections" live on Comcast Channel 17 on Feb. 19 at 1 p.m.

"Political Connections" is a two-hour program geared towards giving candidates for elected positions in the town of Derry the opportunity to explain why they are the best choice for the position they are running for.

"Generally on Channel 17 we broadcast Town Council, Planning Board, Zoning Board and Conservation Commission meetings," video producer/government channel report Kimberley Haas said. "During the afternoon we run series of shows that focus on our different town departments and the elected officials who represent Derry. Political Connections gives people interested in becoming a part of town government the chance to reach voters at home who may not yet know who they are and what they stand for."

Members of the local media will interview candidates for Town Council, School Board and other town positions. The public is welcome to submit questions for the candidates. Contact Debbie Roy, assistant cable coordinator, with questions by emailing her at debbieroy@ci.derry.nh.us.

Roy said political advertisements and other shows produced by political candidates for the purposes of seeking support from voters in the March 13 election will play on DTV's public access station, digital Channel 23. For more information contact cable system coordinator Chris Martin at (603) 845-5515 or chrismartin@ci.derry.nh.us.
