Family, friends remember 'Root' and 'Nip'

'Root' and 'Nip' remembered with memorial bench at course

DERRY — They were good friends, loved to play golf together and served the town for many years.

Roland “Root” Routhier and Mayland “Nip” Lewis were honored last week with a memorial bench at Hoodkroft Golf Course.

Both men died this year and friends and family wanted to remember their commitment to the town, the golf course and to each other.

The new memorial bench faces the first tee and is engraved with a plaque saying that both Routhier and Lewis were strong supporters of the club and community.

Both men were avid golfers, members of Hoodkroft’s senior league and also were instrumental when the club was first being built.

They also served the town as Supervisors of the Checklist for many years.

“He was a great guy to know,” Carl White said of Routhier. “He wanted to help everyone and everything.”

The same went for Lewis, White said, as both men served on Hoodkroft’s board of directors and wanted to be mentors and inspiration for the younger golfers coming through the club’s doors.

Routhier’s widow, Lorraine, received a framed portrait of her husband during the bench dedication.

“This is a wonderful picture of him,” she said. “Look at that little grin.”

Ed Holm said both men did a lot for the golf course.

“They saved us so much money,” he said. “I’d like to know how much money they saved us.”

Lorraine Routhier said her husband did everything the best way he could.

“It was all done in love,” she said.

She said having the bench face the first tee was a perfect choice to honor her husband and Lewis.

Renee Routhier served as a Supervisor of the Checklist alongside her father for years. She said once he died, her mother was appointed to finish out the term.

“She’s doing well,” she said. “She’s learning the database and the computer.”

Both mother and daughter will be up for re-election in March 2014.

After the bench dedication, some of Root’s ashes were set to be dispersed among his favorite golf greens.
