---- — Open gym time offered

Parks and Recreation offers Open Gym at Veterans Hall for youth to come in and practice basketball skills and join in on a pick-up game.

Veterans Hall is at 31 West Broadway. Open Gym is free. Hours are 2 to 4 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays from kindergarten through grade 8; and 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Fridays for high school students.

Children in grades kindergarten through grade five must be supervised by an adult. Older students must show a current school ID to participate. Call Parks and Recreation for information at 432-6136.

Taste a lot of chili

The Salvation Army hosts its annual Chili/Chowder Cookoff event on Oct. 5 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at MacGregor Park.

Money raised goes to support local Army projects in the community. Restaurants participating include Halligan Tavern, Shellie’s Butcher Shop, Lobster Tail, How’s Your Onion, Whippersnappers and Brooklyn Bagel.

The cost for tasting is $5. The public will be able to cast votes for the top chili or chowder recipes.

Garden Club to meet

Derry Garden Club meets on Oct. 4 at 10 a.m. at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Derry, 40 Hampstead Road.

The program is “Putting Gardens to Bed, Dividing Perennials, Fall Bulbs to Plant” presented by Emily Lameu of Chakarian Farms in Derry. An optional perennial swap is also planned. Call 434-0578 for information.

Bake sale planned at Mack’s

The Derry Garden Club hosts its annual Baked Goods and Craft Sale on Oct. 6 at Mack’s Apples in Londonderry.

The sale runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be reasonably priced breads, pies, cookies and other homemade items and crafts.

Anime club meets oct. 9

Derry Public Library hosts its Anime Club for teens on Oct. 9 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.

Participants can draw Manga characters, watch movies and do anime-related crafts. Call Erin Robinson at 432-6140 for details.

Hear about Derry’s ‘Amazing Ladies’

Town historian Richard Holmes hosts a presentation on “Derry’s Amazing Ladies” on Oct. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at Derry Public Library.

Holmes will give a look into some of the community’s most influential and interesting female citizens through the ages. Call the library for information at 432-61460.

Benefit to support toddler

The Jimmy Lehoux Band is performing a benefit concert at the Stockbridge Theater on Nov. 2 to support 2-year-old Rowan Byers of Hooksett, who has been diagnosed with Morquio’s Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder.

Creative Women Writers to meet

The Creative Women Writers group celebrates 10 years next year and meet regularly at Derry Public Library.
