Derry Dog Park draws crowds; will close for work

DERRY — These dogs always have their day.

A typical day at the Derry Dog park brings out regulars, newcomers and pet owners from towns all over the region.

Now it’s time to give the popular spot some improvements and upgrades.

The park is scheduled to close down beginning Sept. 23 so maintenance projects can be completed.

Parks and Recreation director Eric Bodenrader said it’s time to do some improvements.

“Every two years, we do an overhaul in the park,” he said.

The park has to close because much of the work requires large machinery and crews to come in and spread stone dust around the park and other grading.

The projects depend on the weather, so work could take up to 10 days. No one will be able to enter the park during this time.

Until the park closes, it’s still a daily visit for many dog owners.

Rich Whalan of Windham is a regular at the park. He and his dog Jackson are part of a large contingent of visitors this past weekend.

“(Jackson) gets to interact with other dogs,” he said. “Exercise is really important.”

Buddy is a rescued, 4-year-old shepherd/coon hound mix who arrived in New Hampshire from Tennessee.

Owner John Dion of Windham said bringing Buddy to the park is good for his dog’s behavior and social skills.

Many of the park’s visitors come every day, or even several times a day.

“Especially on a Saturday or Sunday,” Bodenrader said. “It’s a good thing and the park is well utilized.”

A doghouse sits near the entrance to the park. A large ceramic dog named Benson is usually housed there, but right now the statue is being stored until the work is done.

The park depends on volunteers and patrons for continued support. A donation box is located at the main gate for anyone wishing to donate to park upkeep.
