Derry primary students tune in to nutrition

DERRY — On March 5, students in Mrs. Lee's second-grade class at Derry Village School heard more than just a good story.

As part of National Nutrition Month, registered dietitian Lori Muller of Derry Medical Center read a book explaining what happens to food in their bodies.

"By first and second grade, children are making more of their own food choices and forming eating habits that will be with them for much of their lives," Muller said. "They are also curious about how things work. By explaining how food interacts with their bodies, we're hoping to help them develop positive eating habits that can benefit their health for the rest of their lives."

Muller is one of many registered dietitians throughout the state who have or will be reading at local libraries and schools. The effort is coordinated by the New Hampshire Dietetic Association to improve the health of Granite State children and families.

"As health professionals, registered dietitians are on the front lines of dealing with the effects of the eating choices people make," said Peggy Connors, a registered and licensed dietitian, who is a board member of NHDA. "We receive extensive education, training and national certification to help people eat in a way that will benefit their health. If we can encourage children to eat healthier and provide helpful information to parents and caregivers, we're happy to do it."
