DERRY — Derry Public Library will host D. Quincy Whitney, author of "Hidden History of New Hampshire," on Wednesday, March 17, at 7 p.m.
Whitney will offer a slide show presentation on her book, an anthology of 60 true stories that encompass seven themes: home and community; government and politics; ingenuity and enterprise; creativity and culture; seasons; forests and mountains; and lake, sea and sky.
The book came about as the result of a research project for the American Folklife Festival. In 1999, when the Smithsonian Institution selected New Hampshire as the featured state, the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts commissioned Whitney to research the topic "New Hampshire Firsts and Bests."
The book celebrates both the phenomenal feats of individuals and also pays tribute to the importance of historic preservation and communities.
