Derry Town Council says goodbye to two members

DERRY — Rick Metts prepared to adjourn his final meeting as a town councilor and said he was ready to become a regular resident again.

"My wife gets her husband back, that's the most important part," Metts said.

After his years on the council, the last two as chairman, Metts said goodbye to the job at the council meeting March 2. Outgoing Councilor Brent Carney also ended his term this week. Both men decided not to seek re-election.

Citing patience, respect and hard work as top qualities for the two men, residents and officials offered thanks and good wishes.

Resident Al Dimmock told Carney he appreciated his hard work and respectful nature while on the council. For Metts, Dimmock had more thanks to offer.

"We've had our differences," Dimmock said, "but I want to thank you for what you've done. So now you can't say it's a thankless job, because you've been thanked."

Councilor Neal Wetherbee added although they haven't always agreed, he believed the town would feel the departing councilors' absence.

"I think it's a loss that neither of you are running again," he said.

Carney said he looked back on the years and said there is a lot to be proud of where Derry's council is concerned.

"Some nights have been trying," he said, "but I think back to our green ordinance, and the private road progress, and I think there's a lot to be proud of."

Metts thanked everyone for their votes of confidence, for giving him the chairman's job for two years, and for helping him learn along the way.

"You've taught me some valuable lessons about governing," he said. "Thanks for the confidence in me."

Metts and Carney received certificates for their service and will also receive commemorative chairs as gifts.

"And enjoy your Tuesday nights (off)," Councilor Janet Fairbanks said.
