DERRY — A local veteran was honored recently by the Veterans of Foreign Wars for being one of its longest running members.
The Derry VFW Post 1617 honored Walter Robertson with a 60-year membership pin at an event held at the post home on March 13.
Robertson, 81, served in the Korean War as a member of the United States Air Force.
A longtime Derry resident, Robertson joined the local VFW in June of 1955. His father, William, served in World War I and was also a VFW life member.
Robertson said he and his good friend Grant Benson Jr. enlisted into the service at the same time. Benson died last month.
“We all grew up together,” Robertson said.
VFW Commander Carl Starosciak presented Robertson with his honor.
“I’m quite proud to see these life members here,” Starosciak said. “It means a lot.”
