Pinkerton marketing students earning high marks

DERRY — For the fifth consecutive year, Pinkerton Academy’s store, Campus Corner, is as good as gold.

The national DECA Association honored the store with a gold level certification. DECA is Pinkerton’s marketing chapter.

Students involved in DECA learn all about the real world of retail management, marketing and how to run a store.

Campus Corner opened at Pinkerton in the 1980s, selling some Pinkerton items and candy bars to students. The store is now a fully stocked operation with clothing, cookies, water bottles, school spirit items and other products, all run under the watchful eye of the young management team of students.

Students handle all aspects of the daily business from purchasing items and marketing to financing and customer service.

Business teacher and DECA advisor Jenn Scheffer said her students did very well during the state competition last month and Pinkerton’s store will be represented at the national competition next month in California.

She currently has 58 students in the program.

“They run the show as much as possible,” Scheffer said.

Seniors Josh O’Brien and Maggie Doherty are store managers this year. They say being able to handle all aspects of the daily operation gives them a lot of valuable experience heading out into the world after high school.

“I am going to be going into hospitality and marketing at UNH,” Doherty said.

O’Brien will head to Southern New Hampshire University next fall to study marketing and communications.

He said running Campus Corner has been good for what lies ahead.

“It also gives me scholarships opportunities, leadership skills, organizational skills, I could go on and on,” he said.

Winners at last month’s state DECA conference and their projects included first-place winners Aaron Wallach, George Holmes and Ben Raymond for sports/entertainment marketing; Samantha Bresnahan and Amanda Jonkas for marketing/communication; Darvy Batjer and Elizabeth Couto for advertising campaign; Kathryn O’Neil for quick serve restaurant management; Krystal Lewis for professional selling; Catherine DeCloux for retail merchandising; and Cassandra Bouchard for hotel and lodging.

Second-place awards went to Wallach and Holmes for a marketing/communications project; O’Neill took a second for her entrepreneurship/franchise work; and Veronic Krol won for restaurant and food service projects.

Erin Holt and Kayla Stacy won a third-place award for a public relations campaign project.
