Town Council names treasurer through June

By Julie Huss

---- — DERRY — On March 5, the Town Council officially appointed Robert Gorham to serve as the town’s treasurer through June 30.

In October, councilors named deputy treasurer Gorham as the town’s treasurer to carry out longtime treasurer Rita Correia’s term through March 2013. Correia announced her retirement last year after 25 years on the job.

Voters also approved a charter change, making the treasurer’s job an appointed rather than elected position. That change goes into effect March 13 when Gorham officially takes the job.

Gorham will serve out the remainder of the fiscal year and officials will then decide what direction to take from there.

Town Administrator John Anderson said officials met with legal counsel to get all the job details ironed out now that the town’s charter calls for the position to be an appointed one.

“In order to align the appointment of the town’s next treasurer with the beginning of the new fiscal year 2014, Robert Gorham has agreed to continue in the position until June 30,” Anderson said.

He said Gorham has done a good job as treasurer during this time. Although Gorham’s appointment is anticipated to end June 30, he will stay on until a treasurer is appointed.

“I intend to submit a recommendation for a treasurer no later than May of this year and will keep council informed of our progress,” Anderson said. “We still have other issues to work out as we continue on from here.”
