Barka teacher wins monthly award

DERRY — A teacher at Ernest P. Barka Elementary School has been honored by her peers for being someone who truly loves what she does when it comes to educating children.

First-grade teacher Beth Sheehan was named the Derry Education Association's teacher of the month.

Sheehan was surprised by her friends and school staff during a ceremony Monday at the school.

Each month, the DEA honors a teacher at a different school after receiving nominations from district staff. DEA representative and Barka staffer Wendy Mahoney presented Sheehan with her award and flowers. Mahoney said Sheehan she was very deserving of the honor this month.

Barka principal Dan LaFleur said Sheehan is highly involved in the school life and a generous resource for her colleagues.

"I hold her in high regard and esteem," LaFleur said. "And she is well loved by her peers and students."
