---- — DERRY — This thrift shop wants more business.
The Marion Gerrish Community Center thrift shop at 39 West Broadway hopes to bring in more customers and will expand its store hours.
The shop now opens at 9 a.m. Monday through Friday.
“We are hoping the earlier opening will attract new customers to our store,” community center director Sarah Garvin said. “The thrift shop has a great base of regular customers, but we want to increase awareness about our store and bring in more.”
Garvin said the center’s thrift shop is a great opportunity for people to not only find great bargains, but also reuse and recycle their own unwanted items, while finding new treasures to take home.
“You can find designer labels at a fraction of their actual cost,” Garvin said.
Everyone who shops at the thrift store also supports the community center. The shop’s proceeds are the main source of support for the 40-year-old community center that serves many organizations in the area, including Meals on Wheels, town meetings, Rotary clubs and other community events.
Nearly 160 groups and organizations meet regularly at the community center. No rental fees are charged for nonprofit groups, but donations are always welcome.
Money collected goes back into the upkeep and care of the building.
“This is why it’s so important not only to have donations, but also to have the customers shopping at the shop,” Garvin said.
The community center operates independently as a nonprofit organization and does not receive any funding from the town.
Garvin wants to spread the word about the importance of the thrift shop and how donations are welcome, as well as getting more business coming through the door.
“We are working hard to get the word out to the community that the thrift shop is here and offers wonderful bargains for everyone,” she said. “We hope the new hours will encourage more people to come and see what we have.”
