Gerrish Center offers more mahjongg

DERRY — The Marion Gerrish Community Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing meeting space for local groups, clubs and organizations, will conduct beginner mahjongg classes, taught by Martha Tomanelli and her assistant, Linda Patkin.

The beginner class will be available to area seniors beginning Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. It will run every Tuesday for six weeks.

This will be the second time the center has offered the beginner mahjongg classes for free to area seniors, but space is limited to 16 participants. Anyone interested in attending and can commit to attending all six classes, should contact the Marion Gerrish Community Center at 434-8866.

In addition, the center will host an independent, mahjongg group each Tuesday, starting Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

All levels of senior mahjongg players are welcome to attend the group and play together. The center will have coffee and some mahjongg sets available, but they encourage players to bring their own sets.

Once the first group of seniors has completed the beginner class, they will be moving into the mahjongg group to start playing with other seniors with all levels of experience. The game of mahjongg is a tile game that originated from China, which is typically played with four people. The game uses a set of 144 tiles based on Chinese characters and symbols and involves skill, strategy and calculation.

The Marion Gerrish Community Center hosts a wide variety of senior activities.

That includes bridge, Mondays and Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m.; Uno, Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.; bingo, Thursdays from 1 to 3 p.m. with the Parks and Recreation Department; cribbage, Fridays from 9 to 11 a.m.; and Forty Fives, Fridays from 1 to 4 p.m.

“With the addition of mahjongg on Tuesdays, we have a senior activity here at the Marion Gerrish Community Center every day of the week,” said Sarah Garvin, director for the Marion Gerrish Community Center.
