---- — DERRY — The police department will be outfitted with new portable radios, thanks to grant funding.

The state has awarded Derry police with a $10,614 grant to purchase three portable radios, microphones, cases and batteries.

The money is the third in a series of similar grants used by police to purchase radios. The department will now have 38 radios with this newest grant installment.

“We assign each officer his own radio,” said Edward Garone, Derry police chief. “They take good care. It’s a good program and they take ownership.”

Having the radios also keeps the local officers in step with programming already in place.

The radios will be sent to an authorized shop for programming services. That cost is also included in the total grant award.
