Derry toddler hurt in fall from window

DERRY — A 20-month-old girl was flown by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital Monday night after she fell about 15 feet from a window and onto the pavement at a Village Brook Lane home.

The child, whose name was not released, suffered serious injuries and was rushed by ambulance to Parkland Medical Center, then taken by helicopter to Massachusetts General Hospital, according to Battalion Chief Mike Gagnon of the Derry Fire Department.

The accident occurred at about 6:30 p.m. at 24 Village Brook Lane, a blue two-story home at the end of a cul-de-sac in a quiet residential neighborhood.

The child fell from a one-story window above the garage and landed in the driveway, Gagnon said. Neither police nor fire officials could say whether the girl fell out of an open window or if she broke through a screen.

Concerned neighbors, including the child's baby sitter, gathered across the street and watched as the toddler was placed on a backboard and loaded into the waiting ambulance.

"She was crying, but doing well," said one woman, who declined to give her name.

Even after the ambulance and a fire engine rushed away, the neighbors watched and hugged as a police officer spoke to a man in the driveway where the accident occurred.

Town assessment records show the home is owned by Fabrizio and Rachel Basso.

Derry police said they could not release details on the accident because there was no evidence a crime occurred.
