DERRY — Several cases of H1N1 flu have been confirmed in the Derry school district and also at Pinkerton Academy.
Notices were sent home to parents about the flu cases, including three confirmed at Barka Elementary, one at West Running Brook Middle School, and two cases at Pinkerton Academy.
In Pinkerton's message, Headmaster Mary Anderson and head nurse Anna Davis stressed the school's policy remained the same as in any strain of influenza, with good hygiene and health practices in effect.
"The 'take home message' remains the same: the current situation calls for concern, good self care and prevention practices, and common sense — not panic!" the Pinkerton notice said.
Pinkerton information added the school is monitoring absenteeism closely.
From all available information, H1N1 is community acquired and community spread. There may be many more cases in the community that have not been identified as H1N1.
Affected students in Derry's elementary and middle schools are recovering, according to district information.
"We have been assured that each of the students are recovering at home and have not been seriously ill due to the flu," the Derry district notice said.
Currently there are no clusters or outbreaks detected or reported in any school in the state.
DHHS continues to recommend that everyone stay home from work or school if you feel sick; cover your mouth and nose with your sleeve when you cough or sneeze; and wash your hands frequently. These steps can help prevent the spread of H1N1 and other illnesses.
