DERRY — The Greater Derry/Londonderry Chamber of Commerce has named town historian Richard Holmes as its 2008 Citizen of the Year.
The award is given each year to honor someone in the community working hard on volunteerism and service.
Other honorees this year include Citizens Bank, Business of the Year and two special awards to be given to businesses J & F Farms, and T-Bones Great American Eatery.
Chamber executive director Gina Gulino-Payne said a committee makes the final decision on Citizen of the Year, choosing someone they feel is worthy of the honor and who works hard to make a difference in the community.
"His work is all volunteer," she said of Holmes, adding he is a wonderful choice for 2008.
Holmes is the author of several history books on the area, is a popular guest speaker at schools, educational events and community activities, and is the curator of the Derry history museum, located in the lower level of the Adams Memorial Building.
Award winners will be honored at the annual Chamber of Commerce dinner and awards ceremony on Oct. 23 at Promises to Keep in Derry. For information, contact the Chamber at 432-8205.
