Council wants public input on road signage
DERRY — The Town Council wants to hear from residents along several roads when it looks to change signs next month.
The Town Council is considering adding a yield sign to the intersection of Sunset Avenue and Sunset Circle and removing two stop signs from the intersection of Fenway and Grove streets.
The council began debating the issue on Tuesday but decided to table the discussion until Sept. 16 to give residents in the area time to comment on how they would like their streets to be signed.
The Highway Safety Committee received a petition in April to install a stop sign at the intersection of Sunset Avenue and Sunset Circle but determined a yield sign was better suited for the area, according to a staff report.
Only one resident was present at the meeting and cautioned that a yield sign would do little to slow down traffic at the intersection.
While debating another petition elsewhere in town, the Highway Safety Committee determined the stop signs at the intersection of Fenway and Grove streets did not meet the national standard for a stop sign.
The committee requested the Town Council remove the signs but Councilor Kevin Coyle said he is a former resident of the neighborhood and liked having the signs to slow down drivers.
The Sept. 16 meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on the third floor of the Derry Municipal Building.
