DERRY — Emily Brown came to Derry from her home in Windham to cool off. Little Jacob Joly, 4, couldn't resist lying down and letting the water splash all around him.
This week's temperatures and bleak days are a stark comparison to last week's hot, humid weather and sunny scenes around town.
For children and their families discovering the town's newest wet spot at Don Ball Park off Humphrey Road, last week's sizzling heat gave way to some fun, splashing around in the cool, spouting water at the new splash park near the playground.
The park, or splash pad, adds a new dimension to the Humphrey Road playground area, already equipped with new equipment earlier this year and one of the town's most frequented spots since the watery new world has opened up. The new water area opened for business about two weeks ago.
The splash park includes fun spots where streams of water shoot out of colorful structures while nearby buckets full of water occasionally pour over as someone zooms by.
Last week's heat brought out great crowds at the park, with about 200 people enjoying the coolness on one day alone.
According to Derry Parks and Recreation, the park was planned as just another fun way to offer local families a chance to enjoy each other while having free fun close to home.
Children attending the Splashpad Park must be supervised by adults, and proper attire must be worn; footwear and sandals are recommended. Additional rules and regulations are available on the town Web site at www.derry.nh.
The park is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Call Derry Parks and Recreation for information at 432-6136.
