Joint statement from Derry councilors
This statement was released Friday by Town Councilors Brent Carney and Kevin Coyle. To read the complete story, click here.
"We appreciate the Fire Department Administration reaching out to both of our families and acknowledging that these comments would be inappropriate if made.
We would also like to personally thank the members of Derry's Town Council who have reached out to support us and our families, voicing strong disapproval over what took place Tuesday Night.
Unfortunately, we have yet to hear from the fire union itself, which is discouraging and disappointing.
We are fathers to young children and husbands first and foremost, and to think that even one member of the fire department could for a second think about not responding to an emergency in either of our homes, or to the homes of any resident in a timely and appropriate manner, is beyond our comprehension.
While we both fully support and respect the rights of this or any union to protest, the threatening comment that was made to us on Tuesday night was inappropriate for any first responder to make. We find such comments disrespectful to the many men and women, in Derry and elsewhere, who proudly wear that uniform and who deserve all of our respect for the difficult and dangerous work they do.
We expect that this incident will continue to be investigated, and dealt with in a firm manner."
