DERRY | Italian eateries are popping up in the Derry downtown area. Where the old Pancake Hut used to be, you can now visit Anthony's Cucina | in English, Anthony's Kitchen.
The newest addition to East Broadway opened for business on the last day of July, and will be open for breakfast and lunch. Margherita Edmonds and her brother, Anthony Cristallo, are bringing a little piece of Italy to Derry. Their mother has operated a coffee shop in Boston for three decades, and is pitching in to help get the new restaurant up and running.
"We are going to be offering Italian/American cuisine, focusing on things not seen on menus in a while," Edmonds said. "We plan to run daily specials such as good, high quality, meatloaf and Shepherd's Pie. We are making our own homemade soups, and breakfast muffins are baked fresh each morning on-site."
The family has been working on the property for six or seven months. They gutted it and renovated it from stem to stern. The new eatery will seat roughly 46 at tables, with 10 barstools arranged along a counter.
"We have three very competent, experienced chefs," Edmonds said. "We plan to begin with just breakfast and lunch, but ultimately we want to offer supper as well."
As soon as school starts, the restaurant is adding someone who will have the dual responsibility of prep person and liaison to the community. Edmonds said this individual will do public relations and community outreach, visiting area businesses and organizations, getting the new restaurant's name and ambiance out to the public. Edmonds added that the family wants to become involved in community events and programs.
"It will take time," Cristallo said. "We've worked so hard and long to get the place in shape and open we are sort of burned out right now, but we hope the customers will discover us quickly." With a big grin, he added that nothing would revive them quicker than people flowing in the door.
Edmonds and Cristallo have been part of the Derry community for a number of years. They've been actively looking for the "right" location for some time. They feel the Greater Derry area's proximity to Boston and the expected increased growth make this the right place at the right time.
The brother and sister team firmly believe that their family run business, family atmosphere and the sense of family already evident among the staff will appeal to local residents looking for high quality food, great service and affordable pricing.
The restaurant, located at 43 East Broadway, will be open from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, serving breakfast and lunch, and from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, serving breakfast only. To call to place an order for take-out or for catering information, call 421-0130.
