DERRY — She is Derry’s oldest living citizen and just celebrated another milestone.
Dorothy Greene, the holder of Derry’s Boston Post Cane, celebrated her 106th birthday on Dec. 13. Pleasant Valley Nursing Center hosted a party in Greene’s honor. She has lived there for several years.
In June, Greene was awarded the town’s post cane for being the oldest resident.
During her party, she was celebrated by her only child, daughter Kathy Robichaux, and other Pleasant Valley residents.
Greene was born on Dec. 13, 1907, in St. John’s, Newfoundland. She moved to Concord at the age of 15, and eventually met and married Roy Green at the age of 21.
After getting married, Greene moved to Belmont, Mass., where she worked as a secretary for many years. She and her husband raised a daughter. She also has four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Greene’s secrets for a long, happy life include family, reading her Bible, and enjoying nice cup of tea with bread and butter.
She also makes sure her hair is done every day and always wears her nylon stockings.
Pleasant Valley has a good tradition with longevity. Previous Boston Post cane holder Catherine Dion lived to be 110 and was a resident of the Derry facility. Staff members said there are several residents who are 100 and older living there.
