---- — DERRY — The holidays are fast approaching and nothing rings in the season in Derry like the annual Greater Derry/Londonderry Chamber of Commerce Holiday Parade.
This year is the 26th year for the event, set for Nov. 24 at 1 p.m.
The parade kicks off on West Broadway and travels down to Crystal Avenue and up to its conclusion at Hood Commons.
This year’s parade theme is “Songs and Sounds of the Holiday Season.”
More than 80 floats, marching units and other returning favorites will fill the streets of Derry.
The Chamber invites businesses, schools, church groups and neighborhood friends to create a float with this year’s theme.
Judging begins on parade day at noon.
Chamber Citizen of the Year Janet Conroy will ride in the parade along with Business of the Year for 2012, Mr. Steer of Londonderry.
Parade sponsors and volunteers are still needed to get involved.
Businesses, individuals and groups can sponsor a band or make contributions to the parade this year.
Annual appearances include Pinkerton Academy and Londonderry High School marching bands.
Children are also invited to bring along letters for Santa Claus to be delivered to the North Pole.
Derry Village Rotarians will be out in force along the parade route to collect nonperishable food items to donate to local food pantries.
Parks and Recreation continues the holiday events following the parade with the annual “Very Derry” schedule of seasonal events, including visits with Santa Claus and other family activities.
