---- — LONDONDERRY — Londonderry High School students will have one less item to carry home.

During the School Board meeting last week, LHS principal Jason Parent approached the board to get the program of studies available exclusively online.

The program of studies outlines the course selections and information for students.

“This is the next logical step,” Parent said. “We print nearly 2,000 of these packets out, providing them to our students.”

According to Parent, the district will save about $3,600 annually by not printing the program of studies for each student, which is more than 60 pages.

Parent said about 1,550 families already have access to the school website and the transition should not be a problem.

Board members agreed the switch would save money, as well as benefit students.

“I like it a lot,” board member John Robinson said. “It keeps up with current trends and saves the school money.”

However, there was some question if the new system would be user-friendly and easy to navigate.

Parent assured the board members the program would be easy to use. In addition, school employees would help students navigate the new system.

Parent said printed copies would be made available to anyone who asked.

There will be a mobile phone application for program studies and course selection as well, according to Shawn Coe, director of Information Technology for the school district.

While the online system is not mobile friendly currently, school employees are moving in that direction, he said.

One student said she thought the new system would be a welcome change.

Anissa Cote, the Student Council liaison to the School Board, said students lose their books, and online viewing would be easier.
