DERRY — The Derry LifeWay Church is sponsoring its fourth summer Block Party on Saturday, Aug. 8.
The party will take place at MacGregor Park on East Broadway in Derry 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Everyone is welcome and the best part is that it's free. These block parties are an attempt to bring back hope, religion and faith in the community, according to organizers.
"It is open to everyone, free admission," Wendy Sims said encouragingly. "There is no charge for food."
The event is run by volunteers and is funded mostly by the church members and different fundraising events. Last year's party cost nearly $14,000.
"Our goal is to reach out to the community, to let them know that people care, there is hope in these hard times," Wendy Sims said.
Each year the LifeWay Church reaches out even further by giving some free items to needy families. This year free backpacks for children will be given out, as well as other prizes.
This year's event has some new attractions such as a skateboarding ramp and bungee jumping. A special exhibit called "The African Experience" will allow people to see what happens in the everyday life of a child in a third world country.
There will also be a rock-climbing wall, live music and games. The Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire will be there, with animals up for adoption.
It will be doing its part to educate the community on animal shelters, and the necessary care that goes into taking care of a pet.
Last year's party drew nearly 800 people and organizers are hoping to exceed that number this year.
