PA students attend Granite Girls State
DERRY — Holly Blanchard and Amanda Crane, students at Pinkerton Academy in Derry, were selected by the American Legion Auxiliary Lester W. Chase Unit 9 of Derry and Merrill Follansbee Unit 37 of Hooksett to attend Granite Girls State.
Holly and Amanda met approximately 100 other students from communities throughout New Hampshire, also selected to attend Girls State.
Granite Girls State is a mythical state patterned after the State of New Hampshire and follows New Hampshire government procedure as closely as possible. It is a program of the American Legion Auxilary for high school girls who have completed their junior year. These young ladies learned first-hand how the State of New Hampshire and their local town or city governments work.
The girls elected their own town, city and county and state officials. They had a chance to act out typical city, town and county meetings. Theylearned about the two-party system, held a caucus, hold a Primary Election, a convention rally and general legislative sessions. They formed their own legislature where they introduced, debated and voted on their own bills.
Granite Girls State was held at Rivier College in Nashua June 28 to July 3 2009. The members spent an intense week of study, working together as a self-governing body. Two representatives to Granite Girls State will be selected by their peers to go to Washington, D.C. as New Hampshires delegates to Girls Nation. There they will join with approximately 100 other girls elected to represent their own States.
At Girls Nation they will learn more about the Federal Government and its processes, possibly meet with the president and the New Hampshire Congressional Delegation, as well as make field trips to several memorials including Arlington Cemetery.
Delegates to Granite Girls States are selected by their local American Legion Auxiliary units from applicants submitted by local high schools. The American Legion Auxiliary Units either pay the girls expenses directly or work to find local sponsors to assist with the costs.
