Cancer-free, Abigail celebrates 1st birthday

By Julie Huss

DERRY — It's been one year since little Abigail Crooker entered the world a fighter.

And it's been a tough one.

Little Abigail fought the battle of her life over the course of her first year after being diagnosed at 3 weeks old with a cancerous tumor on her tailbone.

Born to Stephen and Lea Crooker and weighing in at only 6 pounds, 9 ounces, the baby soon had major surgery to remove the tumor.

In the past year, Abigail endured many chemotherapy treatments to help battle her disease while the community, friends, and family rallied to her family's side to offer support and help.

Many fundraisers helped raise money for the family, in addition to other items including food, diapers, gas cards, and phone calls.

Abigail's grandmother, Barbara Crooker, wanted to offer the family's thanks for the past year of help and concern coming from strangers, friends, and groups in the community.

"Whether it was monetary, hand-made blankets, gas cards, food and diaper donations, cards, calls, prayers it was all so greatly appreciated," Crooker said. "We are still receiving calls and notes from people who are asking how Abigail is doing."

And Crooker said she is happy to say her granddaughter is doing great after five rounds of chemotherapy.

"All of her tests are either negative or normal for cancer detection," she said.

Crooker said having Abigail turn 1 is a big milestone and a celebration of her good health.

"It feels like a miracle for all of us," Crooker said.
