It was a study in science as fans of machines and technology gathered at Pinkerton Academy last Saturday to enjoy the first NH TechFest event. NH TechFest was hosted by Pinkerton and its FIRST Robotics Team 241.
The gathering in Pinkerton's field house offered the latest looks at science and technology advancements, machines, hands-on demonstrations and workshops, and a chance for people to get up close and personal with robotics, safety devices and other research equipment.
Organizers said the goal of NH TechFest was to demonstrate the immediate and future relevance of studies in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to middle- and high-school age students.
Leading edge technology experts, corporations, educational institutions, and professional societies all set up shop in the fieldhouse to offer information and activities to those visiting the TechFest.
Some of the activities offered throughout the day-long event included a special effects engineer showing off models and casts used in recent feature films; robotics displays and demonstrations of FIRST competition robots; health sciences and the future of medical training through the use of a life-like electronic mannequin; engineering where students could build a tower out of paper and see which design could hold the most weight. Also on hand, the latest advancements in air traffic safety technology and science.
"There is a big need to get kids interested in these things," NH TechFest organizer Joe Cunningham said, adding the hands-on activities during TechFest gave students a chance to "see it and touch it."
As part of Pinkerton's mission to offer the world of science and technology to its students, the school's FIRST Robotics team helped organize TechFest while also working on its robotic competitions.
Team 241, the "Astros," is a group of Pinkerton students and mentors who compete annually in the FIRST events and are also active year-round in community outreach projects, education, and fundraising activities.
