Derry police seek tips in copper thefts

DERRY — During 2011, the Derry Police Department investigated more than 35 burglaries in which copper piping and wiring were specifically targeted.

The majority of locations targeted vacant homes that were either for sale, rent or were foreclosed upon. Thieves used cutting instruments, including saws and pipe-cutters, to remove the copper piping.

The metal is believed to be sold at metal recycling centers. Because copper is traded as a commodity and is driven by supply and demand, it is currently bringing in high prices.

The Derry Police Department is aggressively pursuing all leads, but they would appreciate help from anyone who may have information on the culprit or culprits who are responsible for these thefts.

Anyone with information contact Crimeline of Southern NH at (800) 498-4040 or (603) 893-6600. Your call will remain anonymous, you won't have to testify and you could be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
