Dumpster fire forces evacuation

DERRY — Derry Fire personnel responded to a dumpster fire at the rear of 22 Manchester Road. Employees of the Morgan Group discovered the fire when they reported the smell of smoke and "plastic burning" inside the building, but then noticed the fire in the dumpster area outside.

Upon arrival, crews found a full involved 30-cubic yard dumpster, up against the property at 22 Manchester Road, with flames over 20-foot high and a pillar of smoke measuring more than 150 feet. The dumpster contained recyclable computer parts, metals, empty ink cartridges and cardboard.

Mutual aid companies from Auburn, Windham, and the Southeastern New Hampshire Hazardous Materials Mutual Aid District assisted at the scene. New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services also responded to the scene to assist with mitigation and coordinated with the business owner, Morgan Group, to test adjacent soils for contamination from the heavy metals involved in the dumpster fire.

The Morgan Group provides recycling and recovery of electronics and computer parts.

Collision sends one to the hospital

LONDONDERRY — The Londonderry Police Department and the Londonderry Fire Department responded to a motor vehicle accident near the intersection of Route 102 and Mohawk Drive on April 15. The accident involved one passenger vehicle, a 2004 Volvo station wagon XC70 with New Hampshire registration, and a motorcycle, a 2007 DL1000K7 with New Hampshire registration. The operator of the motorcycle, Wayne Lambert, 51, of Nashua, was transported to a Boston Hospital by Med Flight helicopter with serious injuries. The operator of the passenger vehicle, Muriel Normand, 65, of Windham, was treated at the scene of the accident.

Alleged DWI accident knocks out power

LONDONDERRY — Londonderry police arrested Gail B. Weston, Jr., age 84, of Londonderry, on the charge of Driving While Intoxicated. Mr. Weston drove his 2003 Volvo off the road and struck a phone pole on Mammoth Road near Pillsbury Road, which knocked the power out to the mid-section of town including Town Offices. Officers were tied up for hours at the intersection of Mammoth and Pillsbury Roads, directing traffic because the light was also without power. Public Service Company restored power at about 10:20 p.m., an outage of nearly three hours. Mr. Weston was released on personal recognizance bail and his court date in Derry District Court is May 12.
