Derry plans mosquito control
DERRY - The town's mosquito control program begins on April 20 with crews checking swamps, woodland pools, ditches, and other shallow, stagnate areas for mosquito larvae. When mosquitoes are found, the following insecticides may be used: VectoBac, Altosid, Agnique MMF, Mosquito Larvicide GB-1111, or BVA 2 Mosquito Larvicide Oil.
If Eastern Equine Encephalitis or West Nile Virus is located in or near Derry, then emergency procedures and treatment using Anvil, Permanone, Flit, Bifen I/T, or Wisdom TC Flowable may be done at the following locations: East Derry School, Derry Village School, West Running Brook Middle School, Pinkerton Academy, South Range School, Barka School, Grinnell, School, Gilbert H. Hood Middle School, Floyd, Hood Park pond, Ryder Field, Humphrey Field, MacGregor Park, Veterans Field, Alexander-Carr Park, Boys and Girls Club of Greater Derry, Calvary Christian School, and St. Thomas Aquinas School. Officials said it is not possible to predict whether emergency spraying will be necessary. The spray schedule is based upon mosquito surveillance data, disease test results and weather conditions and more information will follow.
Residents who wish not to have property treated must contact Dragon Mosquito Control in writing at P.O. Box 46 Stratham, NH 03885, otherwise treatment on property may take place if needed. Residents can call for additional information on spray dates, locations, materials used, and other concerns at 964-8400.

Judge rejects plea deal
DERRY — A judge rejected a plea agreement that would have put a local father in jail for 30 days for allegedly encouraging his son to fight another boy. Now, the father could face up to two years in jail.
George Primeau, 46, faces two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child for allegedly encouraging his 12-year-old son to fight another boy using martial arts. Primeau is accused of driving his son to the boy's home for the fight. The other boy suffered minor bruises and scrapes from the fight.
Derry prosecutor Anthony Ruggiero and defense lawyer Paul Garrity struck a plea deal in the case, but Derry District Court Judge John Coughlin promptly rejected it Thursday, saying Primeau shouldn't be given a light sentence.
"I find your client's behavior outrageous," Coughlin said.
Coughlin ordered the case go to trial in early April.
Dangerous intersection to get traffic light
LONDONDERRY — One of the most dangerous intersections in town is getting a traffic light.
The state Department of Transportation will install a light on Mammoth Road at the intersection of Litchfield, Bartley Hill and Stonehenge roads.
Left turning lanes also will be installed on Mammoth Road, according to DOT project manager Alex Vogt.
Interim police Chief William Hart said that section of Mammoth Road is a frequent scene of accidents due, in part, because of the number of cars traveling through the area and because of speed.
"The speed limit is posted at 35 mph, but people routinely do 40 (mph) plus," Hart said.
Accidents are most frequent during commuting hours because the road is a major route through town, Hart said.
