LONDONDERRY — A 35-year-old Londonderry man posing as a Direct TV employee was arrested on April 21, charged with stealing money from his neighbors that they thought was for a satellite television subscription.
In August, Charles Bazdanes contacted police because he thought his neighbor, Kyle Berry, had fraudulently sold him a subscription to the satellite television company, according to a police affidavit.
Bazdanes asked Berry, his neighbor, about ordering a subscription through him because he wore a Direct TV uniform.
Berry, of 147 Capital Hill Drive, told Bazdanes he needed to purchase three receiver boxes. Berry said he could sell him a $200 satellite for his home and a $300 subscription to the service. Bazdanes also ordered two sports packages that cost $400, according to the affidavit.
Police contacted the company's fraud department and learned that Berry had ordered three additional receiver boxes for his own account. Each receiver costs $5 with the company but Berry had charged Bazdanes $60, according to the affidavit.
Berry had charged clients about $3,000 worth of services that he never reported, according to the affidavit.
A warrant was issued for Berry's arrest but police were unable to locate him until he turned himself in to Londonderry police on Monday. He has been charged with one count of theft by deception.
He has been released on $2,000 cash bail and is scheduled to appear in Derry District Court on May 13.
